Common Eye Diseases

Coming in for a regular, thorough eye exam can help detect and treat eye disease early to reduce the risk of permanent damage. Here are some common eye diseases we check for.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is often referred to as ‘the silent thief of sight,’ this blinding disease that has no visual symptoms in the very early stages. Over time, glaucoma slowly damages the optic nerve, resulting initially in your peripheral vision and eventually leading to complete loss. There is a correlation between eye pressure and glaucoma.  Because Glaucoma has no symptoms in the early stages, it is paramount to have regular eye exams so we are able to detect it early.  Modern imaging technology allows for early detection.

Cataracts occur when the clear lens in your eye becomes cloudy. As a result, vision can be blurry, harder to see at night, and colours can appear muted.

Cataracts can happen at any age but are most commonly found in people over the age of 60.

Checking for cataracts during your regular eye exam is important because they can develop without any pain or redness. They may also develop slowly over a few years or rapidly over a few months.

In the early stages, your optometrist may prescribe stronger lenses, but as it progresses you may require surgery. Cataract surgery removes the natural, clouded lens from your eye and replaces it with a clear, artificial one. There are many lens options that can be discussed with your optometrist or surgeon before the surgery.

Cataracts can’t grow back; however, if there are remnant lens cells left behind after cataract extraction, they could regrow, leading to clouding of the vision. This is often referred to as a secondary cataract and can happen in 30% of the cases.

Treatment is simple with in-office laser treatment to help clear away the membrane. It is a low-risk procedure.

Diabetic retinopathy is caused when high blood sugar damages blood vessels in the retina. The blood vessels can have abnormal growth, swell, or leak and cause impaired vision.

We offer diabetic eye exams to detect signs of possible conditions that could be damaging your vision.

Treatments include injections and laser surgery.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a condition that causes blurred and distorted central vision, leaving your peripheral vision unaffected. Gradually, important cells in the macular area, responsible for clear central vision, start to die.

Risk factors for AMD include:

  • Genetics
  • UV exposure
  • Smoking

Depending on the risk factors, your optometrist can help manage AMD through diet and lifestyle changes and monitoring at home using the Amsler grid. They may also refer you to a retinal specialist for further monitoring or intervention

Advanced imaging technologies allow for early detection and monitoring of progression. Talk with your eye doctor about the potential risks of AMD.
