Dr. Khan was born in Tanzania, East Africa and migrated to Canada with her family in 1981.
The sciences and health sciences in particular have always fascinated Dr. Khan. After undergraduate training, she obtained a Masters in Science from University of Calgary in the area of Reproductive Endocrinology. She then joined a research team in the Faculty of Medicine doing brain stem cell research in a laboratory setting for about three years. Although she loved research, she realized she missed contact with people. Dr. Khan concluded that the field of optometry would allow her to combine her love for the sciences with her passion for close interaction with people.
Dr. Khan went on to receive a Doctor of Optometry degree from Illinois College of Optometry, in Chicago. During training, she had the opportunity to work in diverse optometric settings including the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Lebanon, Pennsylvania and Walla Walla, Washington. She also worked with a Glaucoma specialist in Chicago and in a Pediatric Practice at the College of Optometry in Illinois. After completing her degree, she obtained a residency in Primary Care Optometry in Chicago. Dr. Khan then joined a refractive surgery practice in the same city where she also served as part time clinical instructor at the Illinois College of Optometry.
She moved to Boston where her husband Sharaz joined a graduate program with Kennedy School of Government at the Harvard University. There she served as full time faculty at the New England College of Optometry and as clinical director at an externship rotation site.
After her husband completed his training they moved back home to Calgary to be close to their families and to start a family of their own. Dr. Khan and her husband were blessed with the birth of twins, a girl Azra and boy Ali. The twins have become a constant source of joy and happiness in their home. Outside her family commitments and work, Dr. Khan enjoys reading, music, and traveling.
Additionally, throughout her career, the field of optometry has indeed brought pleasure and satisfaction in her professional life. Dr. Khan delights in her day-to-day interactions with patients. She says, "Optometry is a great marriage of health sciences and patient care".
